Although many cantons had already recognised its practice of osteopathy, on 1 January 2007, the Swiss Conference of the Cantonal Ministers of Public Health (GDK) published directives to the cantons on the regulation of osteopathy and set up a list of requirements to qualify for the Intern-Cantonal Osteopathy Diploma which requies five years of full-time study, commonly to Master's level, and a 2-year full-time internship.
The cantonal Health Ministries each hold a register of practising osteopaths who have passed the examination and are therefore entitled to be called 'osteopathe, osteopath or osteopata'.
